Operation: Piano Player

Having a piano player at a corps is greatly beneficial for the continued musical and spiritual life of that corps.

Operation: Piano Player is a divisional program to subsidize the cost of Piano Lessons for any Junior or Senior Soldier within the Metropolitan Division. This is done to ensure that each corps can have a piano player ready to accompany singing, and add to the musical worship of that corps. There is a limit to 5 applicants per Corps.

Students enrolled in OPP will have 2/3 of their piano lesson cost paid for by the Army (1/3 by DHQ, 1/3 by the student's Corps), leaving only 1/3 of the total lesson cost for the student.

Eligibility Guidelines

  • The applicant must be at least 8 years old and attend a Salvation Army corps.

  • Endorsements are required from the Corps Officer, private lesson instructor, and a divisional representative.

  • The applicant must be actively involved in the corps and be willing to use this instruction to benefit corps worship.

  • The expectation is the student is to perform once each cycle. (For instance, an offertory, preliminary music, Sunday School opening, or recital.)

  • Renewal applications for continuing lessons must be accompanied by a MAP Piano evaluation or equivalent from the instructor for the previous cycle(s).

  • For more information on the MAP Curriculum visit http://samusiccentral.org/gospelarts/map

  • The applicant must have access to an adequate piano for regular practice. This piano could be the corps piano, provided the student has daily access.

  • Parental permission is required for students under the age of 18.

  • Consideration will not be given to funding lessons already taken before the application of this subsidy.
